Analysis Of Raymond Carver s The Cathedral - 863 Words

One of the Raymond Carver story where we can find a lot of religion symbols; it is â€Å"Cathedral.† The story develops an ironic situation in which a blind man teaches a sighted man to truly â€Å"see† for the first time. Near the end of the story, Carver has these two characters work together on a drawing of a cathedral, which serves as the symbolic heart of the story. The cathedral represents true sight, the ability to see beyond the surface to the true meaning that lies within. The narrator’s drawing of a cathedral has opened a door for him into a deeper place in his own world, where he can see beyond what is immediately visible. This story adds to our understanding of not only looking at the surface of things but to take a deeper look at things that are not always laid out. I believe that he may have chosen this title to send a message to the readers, to make them feel something when the cathedrals are mentioned in the story, as that is where I believe that the writer wanted people to connect with the story the most. But, it could also be seen another way. The blind man seems to see more beauty in things than that of the narrator, who is oblivious to the beauty around him. Another message could be that we take things for granted, just like many at the time took their faith for granted. Jane Eyre vs. Mary Wollstonecraft There is no doubt that Charlotte Bronte knew the works of Mary Wollstonecraft, and she knew them well. Although Wollstonecrafts ideas were written a hundred years beforehand, many women did not read her work because it was not easily attainable. Many women were not educated to read this piece of literature and many men deemed it unimportant to their education. Brontes works were cleverly disguised in womens entertainment, the novel. The main themes both women discuss are education, love and marriage. First, Wollstonecraft discusses education of women as secondary to men. They learn a little bit of sewing, how to dress, how to sing and speak a little of a language. Through her education, she has learned how to sing, play the piano, memorize quotes from books and present herself in an appealing way to men. She is not taught anything beyond this. Blanche does not win the heart of Mr. Rochester because she cannot entertain his mind. The next issue both women present are the way women are treated in relationships. Wollstonecraft warns that women are victims of mens lust. She goes on saying that since men cannot see women for anything but beauty, when the flower dies, the man cannot see anything else the woman is good for. This can lead to a very bitter life for women and men. Bronte shows the dichotomy of Jane and Bertha. Jane is the weed, who never was a flower. Since Rochester admired her for what her insides were--her roots, the love would never die. On the flip side, Bertha was known for her beauty. When it died, there was nothing left. Bertha became bitter and one might say it contributed to her insanity. Thus, beauty was proved not to be an indicator of lasting love in Brontes story. Finally, Wollstonecraft admonishes that in a marriage, couples should not continue to be passionate, but should enter a relationship of friendship instead. Each style of leadership reflects a leader’s beliefs about a follower’s capabilities. A follower’s perception of leadership style really matters to them, as they do not respond solely to what leaders think, do, say and intend, but to what they perceive leaders are. Though they were both philosophers within the same century, but their ideals did not align with each other. Mill focused more on overall happiness, while Kant focused more on the reasons people have for committing certain actions. This is important because it makes the validity of actions and their moral worth put in question. The problem being addressed is what each of the theories implies about the actions people make, and that is important because it may lead people to live their lives in a different way. Corporations in all industries are encouraging minorities, women, elderly workers, people with disabilities as well as foreign workers to join white males in the workplace. The following analysis will focus on these groups and how companies are encouraging them to join an ever-expanding workplace. Even if affirmative action is dismantled, diversity of the workforce is clearly here to stay. Business owners and managers, experts say, will still need to maintain or step up efforts to recruit and advance ethnic minorities in the year 2000 and beyond. That’s essentially because having a diverse work force and managing it effectively will simply be good business for various companies. One business leader who is at the forefront of implementing diversity is the Xerox Corporation. Xerox implemented their strategy for diversification through an â€Å"aggressive, hard driving affirmative action plan.† (Managing Diversity: Lessons from Private Sector, AOL Electric Library). The company has been successful in grasping Diversity by instilling it in it’s organizational culture and making it management priority. The study shows that in businesses with fewer than 500 employees, twenty percent of the senior managers are minorities, as compared with about 13 percent for businesses with five hundred or more employees (Thiederman, 162). The reason probably lies in the fact that the highest net increase of small businesses since the early 1990’s have been minority owned. The number of Hispanic-owned business has grown 76% since the early 90’s proceeded by Asians, Pacific Islanders, American Indians, and Alaskan Natives which grew 61% (Nickels, McHugh, McHugh, 4). Naturally, minority-owned businesses are more opt to promote their own into managerial positions. Either because the business is family owned or they have a limited labor pool of applicants. Managing diversity goes ‘far beyond’ meeting the legal requirements of equal employment opportunity and affirmative action. Whereas Affirmative action is based on mandatory compliance regulations designed to bring the level of representation for minority groups into parity, diversity initiatives within organizations are voluntary in nature. It takes Affirmative action a step further. Organizations that incorporate diversity initiatives as a part of their organizational objectives will be the most prepared they will be to meet the challenges of the next millenium. Whereas Affirmative Action focuses on including those on the basis of race, gender, and/or ethnicity, Diversity initiatives, when well implemented, focuses on all elements of diversity. Management must embrace the inclusion of employees not only with regard to obvious differences of race, sex, and age but also without regard to such secondary factors of diversity as marital or family status, sexual orientation a nd disabilities. Diversity means optimizing the productivity of ALL people in an organization. As small companies approach the year 2000, there are some compelling reasons for expanding their diversity, according to business leaders and experts. One of the most important reasons is that employers can increase the quality of their workforce. It would be a mistake for small businesses not to embrace diversity, in this sense. Women are another major group that has often been underrepresented in the workforce are clearly below those of white and black males. Because of this trend, corporate America needs to recruit women and other minorities into previously withheld positions in management if they choose to remain competitive. The owners of these female-run businesses may find it easier to sell to and more desir able to buy from businesses where women and other minorities are included at management levels.
